International group of military and industry experts will meet in Sweden to discuss future uses of commercial information technology


CITMO 2002 is a workshop designed to explore military opportunities for applying the latest commercial information technologies, systems, and services in ongoing and future military operations.  Delegates from the United States, Sweden, the United Kingdom, the Czech Republic, and other nations will meet during the week of 10 June 2002.  These delegates represent a wide range of industrial, academic, and military organizations involved with information technology for mobile networking, computing, and information security.

The commercial and military sectors have many common interests, such as global, mobile information services; portable computing and virtual organizations; network-centric, electronic commerce; advanced intelligent software; and information security and assurance.  CITMO will investigate these common interests to develop concepts and recommendations for collaboration, experimentation, and implementation.

Recognized experts will present the latest views on requirements, capabilities, and technical approaches to set the stage for working groups to consider opportunities for mutual benefit.  Speakers include Brigadier General Håkan Espmark, Commanding Officer, 1st Army Division, Swedish Army; Mr. Wayne Perras, Technical Director, US Naval Warfare Development Command; Mr. John Cittadino, former Director for Theater and Tactical C3 in the US Office of the Secretary of Defense; Dr. Northrup Fowler, Chief Scientist for the Information Directorate in the U.S. Air Force Research Laboratory; Captain James Dale, Royal Navy, Deputy Assistant Chief of Staff for C4, CinCFleet; and representatives from leading industries and research centers for communications, computing, and information security.  Delegates include senior representatives from military operational and acquisition commands as well as their supporting research organisations.

The workshop will be hosted by the Mid-Sweden University, and will be held in Östersund, approx 600 km north of Stockholm.  It is organized and managed by IDG Europe AB in collaboration with the US Office of Naval Research International Field Office (ONRIFO), the US Air Force European Office of Aerospace Research and Development (EOARD) and the Jamtland Rifles Regiment of the Swedish Joint Forces.
